April 3, Toronto, ON – As the result of the World
Federation of Chiropractic’s (WFC’s) participation in the Bone and Joint Decade
(BJD), WFC Council member and BJD liaison, Dr. Deborah Kopansky-Giles of Canada
will be attending a meeting of experts in Tokyo,
April 8-9, 2009 to consider revised codes for musculoskeletal disorders under World
Health Organizations’s (WHO’s) International Classification of Diseases (ICD).

ICD
codes are important because they provide the basis for reimbursement for care
in many countries.  ICD-10 is being revised, with a view to publication of
ICD-11 in two to three years time.  The meeting in Tokyo, hosted by the Japanese Orthopaedic
Society, is the first meeting of the Musculoskeletal Topic Advisory Group
(MSK-TAG). It is anticipated that the meeting will result in the formation of
working groups in specific MSK areas – such as spine, joint, paediatric,
rehabilitation and rheumatology.
